Are your springs kinky?

Are your springs getting kinky on you? – Just like me, I’m sure you have a love – hate, on again, off again relationship with your springs! One day they are silent and agreeable, and then the next they’re loud and obnoxious. And sometimes, though you hate to admit it, they make you feel a little awkward – that is, they get a little kinky – and that’s when it’s time to end the relationship. Period. If you ever see a kink in your springs it’s time to trade it [..] Read More

I’ve had ENOUGH! (and so should you!)

This tiny but deadly little beast is lurking around in your Pilates studio RIGHT NOW! I’m sure a majority of your Pilates clients have it, and they don’t even know it! But it’s putting your Pilates studio at risk! This nearly silent, seemingly innocuous little devil is wreaking havoc in studios across the world at near epidemic proportions! Why am I so worked up over it you ask? Because I’ve seen its devastation first-hand. I’ve seen how it can literally RIP and TEAR a studio apart at the seams! It’s [..] Read More

On Essential Oils and Pilates Upholstery

Have you noticed how much social media chatter there has been about what we use to clean our Pilates equipment recently? It never ceases to amaze me what can divide a group of individuals bound by one common passion, but I never would have guessed that it would be cleaning products! If you’ll allow me to step onto my soap box for a few moments, I hope you will enjoy this essay I wrote not too long ago on this very subject. Having been a Pilates practitioner and teacher for [..] Read More

Propulsion into 2015!

As all of you probably know by now I believe in forces – those we can quantify with science and those that we cannot. As a technical-minded woman of science many people are baffled that I give credence to, let alone believe in those forces with which we cannot explain with accepted Physics. To them I say Phooey (yes, a “technical-minded woman of science” just said “phooey”)! For some reason or another, under forces greater than I am able to explain or even understand, 2014 brought some of the most [..] Read More

What do you see when you teach Pilates? Do you see body parts? … Heads, shoulders, knees and toes (…knees and toes)?  I don’t, I see hinges, and pulleys, and forces, oh my!  I’m a Pilates Teacher, and I’m also an Aerospace Engineer. – The Pilates Engineer When I teach Pilates I don’t see a body or its parts, I see columns, torque boxes, single force members, trusses, beams…I see forces, vectors, shear loads, stress and strain…I see Newton’s Laws of Motion and Einstein’s e = mc2  (thanks gentlemen!!).  I [..] Read More

Size Matters

Size Matters! Snap hook size that is! Does the size of those snap hooks we all know and love really matter? YES! Absolutely! The length of the hooks changes how some exercises feel and how difficult they are. Using larger hooks increases what we call the “dead length” of the spring. This “dead length” is the distance from the end of the coils of the spring to the equipment it is attaching to, and the larger the “dead length” is the less effective the spring can be.  Ideally the spring [..] Read More

The Everyday Essentials Is your Pilates equipment in need of a tune-up? Let me get under the hood and find out! How long has it been since you’ve looked at your equipment?  If this was your car, it would remind you relentlessly that it needed its oil changed every 5000 miles! Your Pilates equipment is a lot less vociferous; it’s a bit more understanding of your busy schedule – that is until it starts bitching, squeaking, and moaning at you! So how long has it been? Be honest.  I won’t judge, [..] Read More
